What is a Domain name?


Domain name is hostnames which are for the numeric IP addresses which are used to identify computer/s.
Domain names are used to identify webpages in the URL's.

For example a URL is http://www.bbsnetting.com/bbsnet/index.php
The Domain name is www.bbsnetting.com

All domain names got a suffix which will indicate to which Top Level Domain that particular domain is belonging as
.LK Sri lanka
.COM Commercial
.EDU Educational Institutes
.ORG Organizations
.INFO Informations
.AERO
.BIZ

.MIL

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ( ICANN ) has the over all control over the Domain name System (DNS).

ICANN controls the root domain and allows a goverment of a country of TLD in the country domain to regulate it how to deliver or allocate. Other generic top level domains are governed directly by the ICANN. It will look after all the rules and regulations of this TLD.

Domain registers are selling them as agents under ICANN.
